Sheyenne River Flood – Tuesday, April 14, 2009
North Dakota photojournalism legend Bruce Crummy and I toured the Sheyenne River Valley to see the damage the Sheyenne River is causing. It’s rising to historic levels in both Lisbon and Valley City where locals, the National Guard and Army Corps of Engineers continue to raise and monitor dike systems.

Early morning Friday was a far cry from the scene on Thursday. Congested roads and stalled traffic gave way eerily quiet streets. After a wet fall, record snowfall in December and March blizzard the Red River is expected to reach levels similar to the flood of 1997. Massive preparations are underway to fight the flooding including the filling of sandbags by volunteers and dike building.
